The Mystery of George Masa

Produced and directed by Asheville-based filmmaker Paul Bonesteel, this film attempts to demystify the photographer George Masa (born Masahara Iizuka in 1881), a man who came to Asheville in 1915, began working as a laborer at The Grove Park Inn and quickly worked his way up to the position of guide and photographer of the Inn’s most important guests. At one time suspected a spy, Masa befriended a fascinating cast of characters: the wealthy elite, backwoods mountaineers, pioneering foresters, hikers and the Cherokee.

Held in conjunction with the exhibition Mapping the Mountains: The Photographs of George Masa.
